Brian, you raise many excellent points in your discussion about debates. Often they're irrelevant. Sometimes they matter as in Bentsen v Quayle and Bush v Gore and Walz v Vance where Walz was revealed his true putz while Vance revealed his depth. And sometimes they are absolutely decisive. Without a Trump v Biden debate in 2024, revealing Biden to be utterly inadequate to the presidency, Biden would have remained the nominee. Of course, Trump won in the end, but that debate changed the course of the campaign and perhaps the course of history depending on what happens with Harris in 2028.
